Gopher Illustrated is a new arts and culture magazine that raised funding for this first issue from Kickstarter. They aimed to raise $4,500 and ended up with over $5000, which is a fascinating funding strategy and bodes well for independent mags. This limited edition first issue of 1000 is hand numbered by the editors. It’s beautifully designed, printed largely in two colours with a generous helping of full colour – and stickers! I love a magazine with stickers.
They feature the best in contemporary long-form journalism and chronicle work, interviews, music diaries, a short story or two as well as a portfolio section highlighting the work of four artists in every issue. They also feature the work of established artists, journalists and authors along with work by up and coming talents.
The magazine is produced in very limited quantities and every single copy is hand numbered and part of a series. We feature work from around the world but steer clear of “current events.” Every issue comes with sticker pages designed so that each reader can customize their copy, underline or subvert the discourse of a particular piece or place the stickers elsewhere.
Contents: William Giraldi, Mario Bellatin, Jessica Hische, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Estelle Hanania, Nakion, Mario Wagner, Terry Gunnell, Abstruse Goose, Marc Caellas, Anna Lai, Ashley Ellis, Michael Paukner, Edmundo Bracho, Freddie Stevenson, Aerea Negrot, Elisa Mala and even freakin’ Robert Redford
